Scope and Contents

A letter written by Wallace from Fort Chadbourne, Texas, April 20, 1860 to Maj. G. H. Thomas, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, at Camp Cooper, Texas. He offers his regrets that he cannot comply with a request made by Major Thomas because of the presence of Indians in the vicinity.

Biographical / Historical

George W. Wallace was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1839 in the First Infantry Regiment. In 1844, he received promotion to 1st Lieutenant. In 1850 he was made Captain, and in 1862, Major in the 6th Infantry Regiment. He remained in the Regular Army during the Civil War, and in 1866 he was made the Lieutenant Colonel of the the 12th Infantry Regiment. In 1869 that command was transferred to California, via the Arizona Territory. He eventually retired.

According to the Almanac of Texas History, in 1860 Wallace was in command of Company G, 1st Infantry Regiment, stationed at Fort Chadbourne, Texas.

Maj General Thomas was later known as the Rock of Chickamauga.
