In 1853, prior to the Gadsden Purchase, William Walker attempted a filibustering (freebooting) campaign involving his leading a private mercenary army into Mexico. Initially he wanted to establish a buffer state between Arizona Territory and Sonora. He successfully established a short lived republic in the Mexican states of Sonora and Baja California with the intention of bringing Sonora into the United States.
