Onandaga-Meriam Letters, 1850-1859
Scope and Contents
These letters were written mostly from Onondaga Castle where there was an Indian Mission School. They were written by the teachers (one by the principal) to Eben Meriam who evidently was a philanthropist who had visited the school at least once. It is not dear as to whether he had any official connection with it. There are lists of pupils with some of their needs and reports on the school progress. One letter from Samuel J. May is not about the school, except for a casual mention of need of clothing for the children, but instead discusses the Guiteau compass, and how it works. The names of some of the teachers are L. A. Sherwood, J. D. Torrey, William Tibbitts, and Elizabeth Scanadoah.
