Biography

The Tulsa Bibliophiles, or Tulsa Bibliophile club, was a group of like-minded men including Frank R. Billingslee, John G. Ellinghousen, James E. Gourley (Director of the City Library), Rush Greenslade, D. M. Higginbotham, V. J. Houston, Donald McCormick, James L. Neal, John Bennett Shaw, and Edward J. Soph. They were committed to, among other things, collecting all of the first edition works by Walt Whitman.

Scope and Contents The Tulsa Bibliophiles, or Tulsa Bibliophile club, was a group of like-minded men including John Ellinghousen, James Gourley, Rush Greenslade, V. J. Houston, John Bennett Shaw, and Edward J. Soph. They were committed to collecting all of the first edition works by Walt Whitman. In February of 1952, Greenslade and the others endowed the first rare book room in the north basement of McFarlin Library to house the Whitman Collection.
