Biography
Dewitt Clinton Lipe held the following offices in the Cherokee Nation: 1855: Cherokee Senate; 1866: Commisioner on Citizenship; 1868-70: Dist. Clerk ILL Dist.; 1872-74: Dist. and Circuit Clerk Cooweescoowee Dist.; 1874-77: Clerk of all courts in Cooweescoowee Dist.; 1877-79: Cherokee Nation Treasurer; 1893: Appointed to go to Washington DC to sell Cherokee Strip Bonds; 1895-99: Treasurer of the Cherokee Nation for 4 Years; 1907-10: First County Clerk for Rogers Co. DeWitt owned a gen. merchandise store in Oowala and was postmaster of the town. He helped establish the first school at Oowala providing the building and purchasing a bell.
