biographical statement

Tulsa area businessman and collector who owned and operated Shleppey Outdoor Advertising. Later he owned a bookstore in Seattle. He was a lifelong acquirer of things, beginning when he was a child before 1920. His extensive collection of books, artifacts, and papers was bequeathed to the University of Tulsa by the Shleppey family following his death in September 1975.

Illustrated menu cover of a cow kicking a kerosene lamp while an old woman in the background reacts, holding a donut and a cup of coffee. Presumably this is Mrs. O'Leary and her cow from the apocryphal story as to the cause of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
