Scope and Contents
The photo shows the R. M. S. Mauritania sailing through the Strait of Gibraltar. Sister ship of the Lusitania, in 1915 she was used as a troop ship serving the Gallipoli Campaign. In early 1916, she was converted to a hospital ship. By the paint scheme in this image, she is a troop carrier. Africa is in the distance. In the foreground is what Welford elsewhere describes as a mosque and a schoolhouse. Title taken from description on scrapbook page. Image has been digitally altered for clarity.
