"Dear Dame Rebecca, Your letter reached me with some delay as it was sent to an address which I left in 1943; it came though as a blessed relief for I began wondering whether I have done something to upset you. I know you will be glad to hear that since spending that gloriously sunny day at Ibstone House two Sundays ago the emergency position has changed very much in our favour. Indeed, thanks to a few contributions from well-wishers and after selling yet another important section of my library I managed to pay off more than two thirds of the crippling debt to my old printers,- Kenion Press, of 216 High Street, Slough, Bucks.

I have found a cheaper printer but for the next year or so I shall be so heavily committed that I feel very reluctant to borrow still more money even from so distinguished and kindhearted a patron as you are. I am of course willing with any formula you may care to suggest so that your contribution to the magazine should be tax-free, but in the circumstances a word from you explaining what do you mean by 'terms to be arranged' would help me considerably in the present anxiety..."
