"Dear Dame Rebecca, I do hope that your health has improved during the summer and that you have been by now able to resume your writing. Alas, I have gone through a series of quite unnecessary experiences ... During some research conerning Modigliani I recently came across the 'cursing' records of a considerably interesting crank - Beatrice Hastings, friend and then mortal foe of Orage, a popular drunkard in Montparnasse during 1914-1916, then a theosophist in Hampstead, finally a tragic wreck in Worthing where apparently she took her life on October 31st, 1943..."
