 Series

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Artificially assembled collection consists of 70 annotated snapshots of Gertrude Stein and her friends, Georges Hugnet (poet) and Eugene Berman, taken between 1925-1929, at her summer home in Bilignin near Belley, France. Views include: Berman at work on a painting. Most of the snapshots are 2 1/2 by 2 inches, with a few slightly larger. 20 of the snapshots are annotated by Stein on the versos. Gertrude Stein appears in 31 of these casual snapshots. Others show views of the Stein farmhouse, the dog Basket, Georges Hugnet writing poetry, several nude poses of Hugnet, and Berman at work on a painting. Hugnet, a young French poet was a principle member of the Stein charmed circle in the late 1920s. He translated and brought out two books by Stein in French.

The additional ephemera consists of typescripts and handwritten fragments of a paper written about Stein by an unknown author (who may have a sister by the name of Rachel Smith LoBuono) and also includes bibliographic references, press cuttings about Stein's life and works, and two letters from Stein to Mrs. Knopf.
