Indenture between Sir Gilbert Talbott and Thomas Middelmore of Coventry, Mason, for the erection of a chantry chapel on the south side of the church at Whitchurch.

Scope and Contents

This Indenture made the 6th day of January in the sixth year of the reign of King Harry the 8th witnesseth that these be the covenants made between Sir Gilbert Talbott the elder Knight of the Garter on the one part and Thomas Myddelmore of Coventry, Mason, on the other part that is to-wit That the said Thomas Myddelmore shall make the mason work of a chapel at the south side of the Church of Whytechurche. In length from the porch there eastward without the chapel 16 feet and within 14 feet and in breadth within the said chapel 12 feet and without 14 feet and to make in the side of the said chapel 2 windows. And in every window 4 lights, every light 15 inches broad with 3 pillars in every window with botels and casements both within and without. And between the said windows a buttress of stone sufficiently made to bear up the said south side of said chapel and to make in the said buttress 2 tabernacles to set in 2 images and every window 4 feet of height square. And in the east end 2 windows above the altar. In every window three lights and two pillars with botels and casements according to the windows of the south side. And between the said two windows a great pillar for two images to stand in as shall be made in the south side. And the said windows to be 4 feet of height square like to the south side. And to make an altar of 4 feet height and in length 6 feet and a half. And in breadth 3 feet and 2 inches and at the side of the porch a door to be made to fall inward toward the church.

In wideness 2 feet and 9 inches and in height 6 feet with botels and casements according as the said Thomas Myddelmore will devise. And the height of the wall from the ground to the windows about the said chapel shall be 5 feet and 4 inches and the height of the chapel with the windows from the ground upward to the wallplate shall be 10 feet and more. And it may be with five buttress skewed home from the ground to the corbel table of the said chapel. And the corbel table to be in thickness 8 inches. And 2 courses of parpyn stone above the table of 2 foot of height and the crest of stone above that 1 foot with the botrell. And the said Sir Gilbert to bring to the said chapel stone, lime and sand at his proper costs and expenses. And to give and pay to the said Thomas Myddelmore for the making of the said chapel according to the covenants afore rehearsed 16 pounds lawful money after this form following that is to-wit at the first weeks end when the said Thomas Myddelmore cometh to his work with his company 4 pounds. The second payment in Palm Sun week upon schare Thursday 4 pounds. The third payment at Ascension Day 4 pounds. And the last payment at the finishing of the said chapel which shall be as it please God at midsummer next coming. And the said Thomas Myddelmore has received in part of payment of the said 16 pounds the day of the making of these present indentures ten shillings. In witness whereof the parties above said either to the other have put their seals. Given the day and year above said.
