Collection of 2,198 35mm color slides of 590 species of North American birds made by Tulsan Robert Jones Farris between his retirement in 1974 and his death in July 1983. Approximately half the slides have date and locality data. The slides are housed in four, small, portable metal slide cases.

Biographical / Historical

This collection was a gift from Mrs. Robert (Fern) Farris in Aug of 1989.

These slides comprise a master set (to be used for reproduction only) selected by volunteer members of the Tulsa Audubon Society from the 16,000 slides made by Farris, 15% of which were damaged in the 1984 Tulsa Flood and later discarded. Another 1,630 slides, representing 491 species of birds, were given to the Oxley Nature Center (6700 East Mohawk Boulevard, Tulsa, Okalhoma 74115 918-832-8112). The Tulsa Audubon Society retained the remaining slides.

Farris recorded his work in a booklet entitled, "A. B. A. Checklist: Birds of Continental United States and Canada," in 1975. The checklist is arranged in pre-1983 AOU taxonomic order with three columns to indicate species number, whether or not he had sighted the bird, and whether or not he had photographed it. The slides are organized in the same order. The slides were taken with a Nikon Nikormat camera with Zoom Nikor Automatic 200mm, 300mm Soligar, or Reflex Nikor 500mm lenses.
