Scope and Contents

The Erskine Caldwell material is an artificial collection composed primarily of printed editions of his work, including such items as God's Little Acre, Tobacco Road, and American Earth. The collection also includes manuscript material for Erskine Caldwell's Gulf Coast Stories and original pen and ink drawings for by Louis Macouillard for Caldwell's When You Think Of Me.

Biographical / Historical

Erskine Preston Caldwell was an author, born on December 17, 1903 outside of Moreland , Georgia. His father was a minister who led the family from state to state working for various churches. He wrote his forst novel in 1929, but is most noted for "Tobacco Road," and "God's Little Acre." He sympathsized with the poor working class and wrote about their daily sufferings. From 1939-1942, he was married to photographer Margaret Bourke-White. They collaborated on three photo documentaries. During WWII he became a foreign war correspondant. He settled in San Francisco, California after the war. He died on April 11, 1987.
