Buell-Thawley glassware collection, Undated
Scope and Contents
A large collection of rare historical and art glass, aquired over the years by two friends, who were also friends of the University, T. R. Buell and W. R. Hawley. All pieces are assumed to be American in origin, unless otherwise noted in the inventory.

Biographical / Historical
Thomas Rector Buell (1881-1980) and William Roland Thawley (1891-1948) were mining engineers associated with the Gypsy petroleum company and Gulf Oil. They both lived from 1920-1938 at 1402 S. Cincinatti, and from 1938-1948 at 1725 S. Yorktown. After Thawley's death, Buell donated the glassware collection they had acquired together ("T. R. Buell old glass collection"), and a portrait of Thawley, to the University.

The glassware was housed at Philbrook Museum between 1960 and 1996.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Donated by Buell as a tribute to Thawley, July 1948.
Separated Materials
The portrait of Bill Thawley was separated from the collection and is now missing.
