Scope and Contents The photo shows the R. M. S. Mauritania sailing through the Strait of Gibraltar. Sister ship of the Lusitania, in 1915 she was used as a troop ship serving the Gallipoli Campaign. In early 1916, she was converted to a hospital ship. By the paint scheme in this image, she is a troop carrier. Africa is in the distance. The photo shows fourteen men as a football squad for St. Ignatius Hospital, Malta. The different hospitals fielded teams which played against each other. Cricket in the summer. Results were announced in the Daily Malta Chronicle and Garrison Gazette. St Ignatius was a much smaller hospital than most of the others - its team didn't do all that well.
