Headquarters, Fort Chadbourne, Texas 20th April, 1860 Major, Your letter of the [inst], postmarked Fort Smith, 15th April, was received by me this morning and in reply regret my inability to comply with your request. Owing to the presence of Indians in this immediate vicinity of this post, I have been compelled to send a detachment from my company to take charge of the mountain pass station of the O, L and M Co., and ere long it will no doubt become necessary to send out additional parties to take charge of other stations. Indians were heard and seen lurking around the valley creek station, twelve miles east of this post last evening. [Tll] the women and children belonging to sais stations came in here this morning for protection. Very respectfully, Your obedieant servant Geo. W. Wallace Captain, 1st Infantry Commanding. Major G.
