David Sloan Stanley Journal, 1853
Scope and Contents
A diary of a journey from Fort Smith to San Diego in 1853 was kept by Lt. David Sloan Stanley who was accompanying Lt. A. W. Whipple on his assignment to locate the southern route for the Pacific Railroad. This diary appears to be the account of that expedition.

Biographical / Historical
David Sloan Stanley was born .June 1, 1828 in Cedar Valley, Wayne County, Ohio; He graduated from the U. S. Military Academy in 1852, and Union Army officer during the American Civil War; Medal of Honor for actions in the Battle of Franklin; fought in Battle of Wilson’s Creek; after Civil War appointed colonel of the 22nd U.S. Infantry serving in the Dakota Territory until 1874; commanded the Yellowstone Expedition of 1873; ordered to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1882; March 1884 command of the Department of Texas). He died March 13, 1902 in Washington D.C.
