Gwyn-Howard Manuscript, 1684-1689
Scope and Contents
A manuscript of the 17th century, this volume contains a series of important official reports, some of which appear to be in the handwriting of Francis Gwyn, Under Secretary of State, 1681-89. There are about 200 pages in all, bound in contemporary calf and in fine condition. It is No. 7419 from the Phillipps collection. It is written in both French and English. One or two entries are signed "True copy-Robert Livingstone." On the title page is inscribed "Severall treaty's with the Indians by L. Howard, Governor of Virginia in 1684. Alsoe with the 5 Nations at Albany in 1687 ..." The L. Howard would be the Rt. Hon. Francis Lord Howard, Baron of Effingham, his Majesty's Lieut. Governor General of Virginia.
