Peter M. Carter, Alderman of the City of New York and Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, makes affidavit that Joseph, a mulatto twenty-five years old, has always been and is now adjudged a free man according to the laws of the State of New York.

These papers consist of seven letters concerning the indenture of Jonathin Chin, an Indian, to William Wanton "for a certain length of time." The indenture is dated October 20, 1715, at Newport, Colony of Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations.
