Summary

Diary consists of sewn signatures of 137 graphed sheets. Contents are written in both pencil and pen throughout. The diary dates begin with the back cover and head to the beginning of the book. A "Champagne Mercier" label, removed from a bottle, is pasted on to the inside of the front cover; a "Compagne des Grands Vins de Champagne, E. Mercier & Co., Epernay" label is pasted on to the inner back flyleaf. The inside back cover shows an attempt at repair with white gauze tape. Handwritten entries are written variously in lead pencil, brown ink, and purple pencil. The daily entries begin on page 2 (being a brief chronological description of his enlistment, training and transport, August - November 1917) but resume on page 137 (December 1917) and continue from the back of the diary to the front. There are multiple dated entries.
