Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of a major part of of British poet and novelist Stevie Smith's (Florence Margaret Smith) manuscripts and drawings, including 800 sheets of draft poems, some with multiple poem entries; typescript of The Holiday; broadcast scripts, poetry readings, drawings, manuscripts, postcards, notebooks, correspondence and family records and photographs.

Also included is the personal library with 90 volumes of her own writing, many of which contain autograph corrections and revisions. Also included are 188 annotated volumes of other peoples work. The entire library comprises 1,044 volumes.

Biographical / Historical

Florence Margaret Smith, known as Stevie Smith was an English poet and novelist. She was born on September 20, 1902, Kingston upon Hull, England. She spent most of her working career as a personal secretary. She wrote three novels but is most known for her poetry collections.
