Scope and Contents The Elizabeth Jennings manuscripts consist of 39 notebooks and loose sheets of handwritten working drafts of approximately 2,225 poems, many with handwritten revisions, written between 1973 and 1992. In the early 1820s the merchants and wine-traders from Britain who had settled in Oporto, Portugal, felt the need for a library of English books to serve the increasing number of British families living in and near the city. Consists of 72 autograph letters and 5 Christmas cards (most accompanied by their envelopes) to friends and colleagues including Ian Hamilton, H. A. Rappaport, Alan Ross, and Roger Senhouse; also included is a cablegram to Hartley from Harvey Curtis Webster. The collection also holds editions of Hartley's books, books to which he contributed, and secondary critical appraisals, and an extensive run of Weekend Review, a journal to which Hartley made regular contributions.
